Premium lens options
The image below shows what it might be like looking through an eye with a cataract. This acts as a reference for vision after cataract surgery as seen through various lens implants further down the page.
Premium intraocular lens (IOL) implant options:
In the past, only monofocal (standard single vision) implants were available. Now, a large range of premium IOLs are available which provide the option of minimising the need for spectacles after surgery, or doing away with them completely.
Standard Monofocal IOLs:
These lenses provide good distance vision for tasks such as watching TV, driving and outdoor sport. However, spectacles are required for intermediate (arm’s length) and near (reading) vision. This is the most common type of implant used in the NHS.
Premium Monofocal-Plus IOLs:
These implants are the latest addition to the monofocal IOL family. They provide a better range of far and mid-distance vision, however spectacles are still needed for intermediate and near vision.
Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs:
These premium lenses provide good distance and intermediate vision sufficient for most daily visual activities done at arm’s length including shopping, cooking and using desktop computers, without the need for spectacles. Reading glasses may still be needed for close work.
Trifocal / multifocal IOLs:
These top end premium lenses aim to provide a full range of good distance, middle and near vision, without the need for spectacles. Most patients who opt for this type of IOLs enjoy spectacle independence for a wide range of activities. However, 5-10% may see halos or glare around point sources of light. This can go away, but it is important to consider this risk in combination with your lifestyle.
Toric IOLs:
Uncorrected astigmatism can distort vision by making your vision look elaongated and blurred . Premium Toric lens implants help to correct astigmatism at the time of surgery and can be combined with any of the lenses mentioned above.
In some cases, other combinations of different types of lens implants are required to address specific eye health and lifestyle needs.
